Matthews, North Carolina

Until recent years, Matthews was largely an area of farmland, woods, and rolling fields. Settlers began to occupy and farm the area in the early 1800s, cotton became king as the major cash crop of the area. Today, numerous historic buildings from this era still stand, including the Victorian-style Reid House, used for special events. The Funderburk General Merchandise Store retains even its tin ceiling and brick walls – a rare site in the fast-changing Charlotte region! The National Register of Historic places includes 10 downtown Matthews buildings on its list.

Matthews is now home to about 30,000 residents who enjoy a host of shopping, dining, and business options. Because it’s located within an easy 20-30-minute drive of Uptown, many Charlotteans live in Matthews and commute to work. More still work at one of Matthew’s many local and national businesses, including Fortune 500 company Family Dollar and Harris Teeter, both of which are headquartered here. The city is part of the CMS school system and reputedly has some of the best public schools in the area.

People who live in Matthews say they love the small-town feel. The downtown area is highly walkable and hosts regular events such as “downtown crawls” and Food Truck Fridays. Matthews is far enough removed from Charlotte to feel like a modern-day version of Mayberry, but close enough to still enjoy the sights, sounds, and amenities of the city.

There are typically a wide variety of very affordable homes for sale in Matthews.  Whether you’re looking for an upscale luxury estate community or a thoughtfully designed townhome, Matthews has plenty of options.
